Obituary for Peter Gerard O'Meara

O’MEARA, Peter Gerard
November 22, 1946 – January 26, 2020

Suddenly after a short and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family at Grand River Hospital on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the age of 73. Beloved husband of Patsy (nee Aymer) O’Meara. Loving father of Kathleen (Gavin) McDonald, Michael (Barbara) O’Meara and Mary Pat (Dave) Mottola. Adored Grandpa Peter to Sean, Meara, Neal, Maeve and Wilder-Jack. Survived by his siblings Paul, Mary Ellen, John and their families. Peter will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and dear friends.
Peter was born to John and Noreen O’Meara and raised in Port Credit. He married his high school sweetheart, and went on to become a passionate educator and principal. Peter’s love of the outdoors, his natural leadership qualities and strong faith allowed him to lead a rich life and leave a beautiful legacy for his family.

My friends, have no fear, my work was done well,
In this life I broke the waves and rode the swell,
I found faith in those that I called my crew,
My love will be the compass that will see you through.

Maureen Montemuro

I was so sorry to hear about my cousin Peter’s death. What a beautiful obituary! Peter lived a very full life and touched many lives. My condolences to Peter’s wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as to his siblings — Paul, Mary-Ellen and John. I wish I could have come to pay my respects to Peter and his family at his funeral mass but I am in England visiting another cousin of Peter’s, my sister Trish. As children, our family (the Montemuro’s) spent a number of fun times with the O’Meara family in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan where our grandparents lived, in Port Credit where the O’Meara’s lived, and in Thunder Bay where we lived.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Maureen thank you for your kind words. We are heartbroken. We have fond memories of time spent with the Montemuro’s in Thunder Bay and in Toronto. Peter loved the Lakehead. One of the photos at the funeral home was of our beloved Auntie Jose at my mum’s funeral. Thank you again.

Peter was a dedicated Catholic educator . I had the pleasure of working with Peter while he was at Cardinal Leger and then as part of the team in Employee Relations at the board . Peter was always a team player and always put students first in any decision.
Peter brought a great sense of humour to the work place which made working with him such a
pleasure .
Peter is a part of the history of Dufferin Peel.
RIP Peter

Peter, I will always remember your great sense of humour, warm laughter and really corny one-liners. Every year, you made the long hours go by quickly at the front gate of the Fall Fair. You brought the kid out of me with so many giggles. Now when anyone asks me, “How are you doing?” I reply as you did, “If I was any better, I couldn’t stand myself!” To the extended O’Meara family, you were so blessed to have Peter in your life. Peter, I will miss you.
