Obituary for Steven James Hartnagle

HARTNAGLE, Steven James
April 20, 1959 – February 12, 2019

With his family right by his side, Steve passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at his home in Acton. Steve will be forever cherished in the hearts of his wife of 32 years Kathleen (Dills) and sons Joseph David (JD) and Matthew Dean. Loving son of Patricia and the late Joseph Hartnagle, Steve will be missed by his Michigan family, his brothers Mark (Kathy) Hartnagle, and the late Jim Hartnagle and his sisters Pam (Chris) Eckert, and Deb (Kurt) Kwiatkowski, his nieces Taryn (Phil) Dennis and Katie (Scott) Lafever, nephews Aiden Eckert and David Hartnagle and great-niece Josey. Steve was also dearly loved by the late
Kay and Dave Dills, his in-laws.

Steve, his dad Joe, and his brothers loved the outdoors and grew up with a passion for hunting and fishing and Steve cultivated that knowledge into Blackfly Lures, a business he proudly ran for over 20 years with his helpers including Charlene and Corey. As per his request, this year’s fishing shows that start Thursday will be manned by family team led by Matt. Steve was also a meticulous painter and successfully operated Hartnagle Painting. He developed a number of special customers including Audrey who contacted him every day. With a heart of gold woven with a wee bit of a stubborn streak, Steve was a wonderful husband and friend. He enjoyed time alone in the woods, experimenting with his smokers, and cooking up feasts. Steve often favoured socially questionable T-shirt slogans, loved a good Scotch and would mutter his opinions at news radio. But more than anything he was proud of his sons JD and Matt and what they have accomplished.

Diagnosed a year ago with cancer Steve taught us many lessons about life and what is important. He was so grateful that both Matt and JD chose to come back from their homes on the west coast to support him as he courageously fought this disease without complaint. The Goldens, Pippa and new puppy George provided endless love, companionship and many laughs in a difficult time. The family is grateful for the incredible care and support he received from his teams at Princess Margaret and CCAC with special recognition to Dr. Colleen Darling and Jericho whose kindness will not be forgotten.
As per his wishes there will be a pre-party at The Acton Town Hall, 19 Willow Street North, Acton
from 2 – 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 and the “real” party to follow at Leonard Lake in the summer.
Steve saw how necessary support for those surviving cancer was so if desired a donation to Cancer Assistance Services Halton Hills (CASHH) or Princess Margaret Hospital Head and Neck Clinic would be greatly appreciated.
